At The Children’s Resource Center we understand how difficult finding quality, affordable child care can be. Catawba County alone has over 150 child care related programs! As a parent, the task of finding appropriate care can be overwhelming.

The Children’s Resource Center’s Staff can help families find child care by making impartial referrals to day care centers, family child care homes, and half-day programs from our computer database. We offer families the tools to make wise decisions regarding child care–including literature and brochures on quality care. This free service is available to everyone.

What to expect when you contact us:

  • You will receive friendly, knowledgeable service as you tell us about your child care needs.
  • We then match your needs against our database of providers to give referrals.
  • We discuss what to look for in quality care and will answer any questions you may have. We are happy to work with you until you find a child care arrangement which suits your family’s needs and desires.

QUESTIONS YOU SHOULD CONSIDER WHEN LOOKING FOR CHILD CARE:

Basics…
Is the program licensed? Are the hours acceptable? Are the fees affordable? Facility safe and well maintained? Is the setting cheerful? Are the toys safe and appropriate? Is there good light and ventilation? Are there smoke detectors and fire extinguishers? Clear exits? Are medicines/cleaning products locked away safely?

Do the caregivers…
Seem to enjoy children? Respond quickly to children’s needs? Play with children? Are they gentle in handling children? Is there a policy on discipline? Do parents meet with the caregiver on a regular basis?

Are activities….
Varied and age-appropriate? Do the children play outdoors each day? Is there a clear schedule for meals, naps, and play times? Are parents welcome to spend time there? Are snacks and meals balanced and nutritious?

Think it over…
Are the caregiver’s attitudes toward children compatible with or complementary to your own? Is the caregiver’s style appropriate for your child’s age and temperament? Would the size of the group allow your child to get the attention they need? Would the activities be enjoyable? If there is a disagreement, would you be comfortable discussing it with the caregiver? Are caregivers the role models you want for your child?

Try to visualize….
your child in this setting. Is it a happy image? Trust your instincts. If you feel you need to visit again, do it. You are the best judge of what your child needs.
